Galileo Galilei was born on the 15th of February, 1564 and lived an astounding life until his death at the age of 77, in 1642. He was an extremely famous astronomer, scientist and philosopher from Tuscany, Italy. With his many theories and experiments, he challenged the norm of thinking of his time, which had followed the beliefs and theories of Aristotle. One of the theories of Aristotle was that the Earth was at the center of the Universe, and that every thing else revolved around us. Galileo disproved this and further brought light and support to Copernicanism, the theories and beliefs of Nicolaus Copernicus, by using his new telescope, finding that 4 moons orbit Jupiter, which proved that not all things orbit around earth. Galileo also made discoveries involving the telescopic confirmation of Venus' phases, the observations and analysis of sunspots, as well as vastly improving the telescope. Unfortunately, many people became enraged with him, especially the Pope Urban VIII and the Church. They were very angry with Galileo, for he had challenged the long-held beliefs of Aristotle, which were the beliefs of the church at the time. Due to this, in 1633, the church convicted him of heresy, putting him on house arrest for the rest of his life while also banning his book Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief Systems. Though good did come out of this, for when he was on house arrest, he wrote one of his finest works, Two New Sciences. Galileo Galilei left a tremendous legacy and is often referred to as the "father of physics".
